Sainz Nears Decision on Audi F1 Future

23/05/2024

Carlos Sainz has confirmed progress on his future since Imola, sparking speculation about a potential move to Audi F1 in the coming days.

Carlos Sainz is on the brink of securing his future, potentially with Audi F1.

Recent speculations and paddock buzz from Monaco suggest this could be imminent.

The Spaniard, who reportedly saw the door at Mercedes F1 close, still hopes for a chance with Red Bull Racing. This could either be replacing Sergio Perez or even Max Verstappen. However, these are highly hypothetical, medium-term scenarios that might jeopardize his future.

In Monaco, Sainz was asked to comment on his current thoughts.

“Behind the scenes, things have progressed since Imola, I know more than you,” the Ferrari driver confirmed.

“Everyone depends on everyone else. Formula 1 is a circle. You hear the rumours and everything, but don’t worry, I’m not going to say anything and let it slip!”

“I’ll simply lay all the options on the table and make the right decision. I can only tell you that once my mind is made up, things will move quickly. It’s about gathering everything I need for my next contract.”

Audi is awaiting a decision by May 31; otherwise, they might turn to their Plan B, Esteban Ocon. Can he decide in a week?

Without denying the deadline, Sainz admits he might try to buy some more time.

“I haven’t made my decision yet, I don’t know where I’ll be racing next year. I don’t have a deadline in mind, but I can tell you that with such an important decision at this stage of my career, I want to have all the cards on the table to make the right choice and think it through carefully.”

“I’m about to turn 30 this year, and the next project is one I really want to make work. So, I’ll give myself as much time as necessary.”

Regarding Monaco, Sainz remains cautious about Ferrari’s chances.

“Red Bull, McLaren, and we can win here. But we haven’t been the best in qualifying, we haven’t always been the best at low speeds, so maybe it’s my job to temper the expectations of those who see us as favourites.”

“Of course, we want to win, we can win, we just have to work for it and do everything right in qualifying and the race. Nothing is impossible, but nothing is easy.”
