Sainz Still Searching for Pace in Williams F1

03/03/2025

Carlos Sainz admits he is still struggling to extract full performance from his Williams F1, feeling “a bit lost” with its limits.

Carlos Sainz was candid about his inability to extract the maximum potential from his Williams F1 after pre-season testing in Bahrain.

Sainz’s testing ended at the conclusion of the second day at the Bahrain International Circuit after spending the entire day in the car.

The Spaniard topped the timesheets on Thursday, and his time remained the fastest over the three days when testing concluded on Friday evening. While it is unlikely that Williams will be able to compete with the top four teams in 2024, the team appears to be in a better position than it was 12 months ago.

“In terms of driving style, I’m still figuring out what I need to do with this car to be fast because, to be honest, I’m still a bit lost in finding the lap time.”

“I don’t know whether that will come from corner entries, exits, or minimum speeds, and that’s why Thursday’s fast run was important for me to understand where the lap time is coming from.”

“I feel that when I push, I can reach a decent level. I still don’t know where the last two tenths of the car are. That’s what I need to discover in the first five or six races by putting more soft tires on the car to try and understand where the lap time will come from.”

Sainz, however, has enjoyed working with Alex Albon and believes the duo is well-suited to pushing Williams forward.

“Alex is one of the best guys I’ve met in Formula 1. He’s an incredibly talented driver but, above all, a great human being.”

“And you can see he’s on this journey with Williams, trying to bring the team back to the top. The feedback he provides, the insights he shares with me about the team, the car, and how he’s helping me understand how the team operates and how the technical side evolved last year.”

“This is exactly the kind of relationship and teammate I need at Williams right now because we’re both going to give everything to try and bring this team back to the top. And I think Alex is the perfect guy to do that.”
