Carlos Sainz finished third in Monaco, finding it too difficult to overtake, but celebrated Charles Leclerc’s victory at his home race.
Carlos Sainz escaped the worst, managing to restart third after the second start, despite a puncture that had sent him to the back of the grid initially. Holding third throughout the race, the Spaniard navigated between the two McLarens to secure an important podium for Ferrari.
“It was tight! I had a bad feeling on the first lap, which turned into a good feeling after being restored to third. From there, the race pace was good, as expected, but it’s just too difficult to overtake on the streets of Monaco,” Sainz said, pleased to see Charles Leclerc win.
“But I’m happy to see Charles win at home, given how he drove all weekend. Sharing this podium with him in third place is good for the team. Everyone deserves it as we are getting stronger, weekend after weekend.”
The Spaniard was able to push at the end of the race and was pleased with his effort: “Once it was clear that Lando didn’t have the gap for a free stop, I could push and do 1’14 laps to put pressure on Oscar and try to force him into a mistake. I saw him lose the rear once or twice but it wasn’t enough to catch him.”
