Sainz Reflects on Red Bull - Mercedes F1 Rejection

Sainz: “It Hurts” to Be Snubbed by F1’s Top Teams

19/11/2024

Carlos Sainz opens up about being overlooked by Red Bull and Mercedes, admitting the rejection “hurts” and fuels his competitive drive.

Carlos Sainz admits he “still doesn’t understand” the decisions behind top teams rejecting him this year.

Sainz was one of the strongest drivers on the market after learning he would lose his Ferrari seat in 2025 to make way for Lewis Hamilton.

However, opportunities with Red Bull, Mercedes F1, and Aston Martin failed to materialize, leading him to choose Williams over the new Audi F1 project.

“I am definitely at peace with myself, with my choices, and how I handled negotiations. I truly believe that if I didn’t stay with a top team, it’s because life didn’t intend for me to.”

“It’s because something else is going to happen, something good. It hurt at the time. We all have egos; I have a driver’s ego.”

“I couldn’t understand it back then. I still don’t understand some of the choices people made. But it fuels me with more challenges and excitement for Williams.”

“Williams invested in me, supported me from the start, and reached out a year ago. That excites me; I want to give back what they’ve given me. It gives me strength. I’m eager to get started and build something great.”
