Carlos Sainz: Mercedes F1 Negotiations Underway

13/03/2024

Carlos Sainz’s entourage has begun talks with Mercedes F1, signaling a potential pivotal shift in his career following his appendix surgery absence in Jeddah.

Carlos Sainz’s entourage initiated negotiations regarding his future during the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend. The Ferrari driver was forced to miss the Jeddah weekend after suffering from appendicitis. Following a successful surgery, Sainz was seen back in the paddock before the Grand Prix on Saturday.

Although Sainz was not in action on track in Saudi Arabia after Free Practice 2, his circle, including his father Carlos Sainz Sr, as well as his manager, Carlos Onoro (his cousin), were spotted leaving the Mercedes F1 hospitality suite after a long meeting with Toto Wolff.

According to multiple reliable sources, negotiations with Mercedes F1 have begun for Sainz. The goal? To outline a “ready to sign” contractual framework in case and when both parties decide to proceed.

Sainz Eyes Hamilton’s Mercedes Seat

The Spaniard is one of the top drivers who will be available at the end of the season and has a great chance to replace Lewis Hamilton. The Sainz camp might be favoring a solution that guarantees quick competitiveness at first, but they are also keeping an eye on the Audi F1 project for 2026.

Sainz downplayed the conversations happening in the paddock between his father and various top teams, including Red Bull in Bahrain.

“If you’ve seen my father going to say hello to Helmut Marko, you must remember that he maintains excellent relations with him in the same way we maintain good relations with Toto,” he said.

Mercedes F1 is, of course, not just considering Carlos Sainz. Toto Wolff will undoubtedly wait to see how the situation unfolds at Red Bull Racing after the Horner affair, with the real possibility of acquiring Max Verstappen if tensions do not really calm down behind the scenes.

“We are already discussing with drivers, managers, the phone rings, it’s normal,” confirms Wolff. “But we are going to take our time because this transfer market can hold a lot of surprises.”
