Carlos Sainz believes Ferrari can surpass Red Bull for second in the championship, showcasing the team’s resilience.
Carlos Sainz stated that Ferrari has Red Bull “in its sights” as the team aims to overtake the reigning champions for second place in the standings.
It might have seemed fanciful for Ferrari to catch up to Red Bull at the start of the year, but even more preposterous was the notion of Ferrari chasing Red Bull for the second spot in the championship. Indeed, McLaren has now led for two races and is on a strong trajectory for the constructors’ title.
Sainz has contributed 190 of Ferrari’s 441 points, and the Scuderia is now just 34 points behind Red Bull in second place.
With McLaren likely to increase its lead at the top, Sainz believes their best shot is to target Red Bull.
“McLaren definitely has the advantage,” admits Sainz.
“They are the favorites for the title. We still have Red Bull in our sights, and obviously McLaren, if they start to falter or if they begin to encounter problems, we need to stay in the mix.”
Second place may not be the title Ferrari claims, but it would be a fitting end to a season that has seen its challenges. From Montreal to Zandvoort, Ferrari went seven races without a win, but Charles Leclerc’s success in Italy suggested that a new momentum had been found.
“I think it would demonstrate good resilience from the team,” says Sainz about a possible second place. “After a difficult part of the year where we lost many points and struggled in our development curve.”
“But Red Bull is going to come back strong with upgrades, by the end of the season, once they figure out what’s wrong. Moreover, with their car, it won’t be easy to beat them either.”
Sainz then suggested that the recent races had been a “missed opportunity” for him, as the Spaniard has not been able to reach the podium since Austria.
“The last two races were a missed opportunity, and I’m not satisfied with everything I’ve done these past weekends. At the same time, you never know what’s ahead, and we could be surprised by our performance in Austin, Mexico, Las Vegas, and the final circuits.”
“I will also adopt an optimistic attitude for the remaining six races of this long year, but I will work on my weaknesses and put myself in a better position for the last six races.”
