Ferrari’s Sainz and Leclerc secure crucial second-row spots, boosting their chances for a strong Sunday performance in Austin.
Ferrari to lock out the second row of the starting grid in Austin. Carlos Sainz was pleased following qualifying, having secured third place, two spots higher than in the Sprint Qualifying the previous day.
“That was the goal, to take a step forward in qualifying compared to yesterday. Yesterday I was fifth, today I’m third, so I’ve made progress in the right direction,” the Spanish driver commented after qualifying.
“I’m a bit disappointed about that final lap because I was three-tenths quicker with two corners to go, but we’ve made good progress. We should be in the fight tomorrow if we get a good start. It should be fun with the two guys ahead.”
He acknowledged that tyre degradation had been a concern throughout the qualifying session: “I was always keeping an eye on it because it’s something we’ve struggled with recently, getting the car into the right operating window during qualifying.”
“We always seem to be quick in the race, but we’ve had ups and downs in qualifying. But it seems we got it right, especially on that last lap before the yellow flag. We had the car in a good position, and we managed to find a lot of time in the final two sectors.”
Charles Leclerc, who had set the third-fastest time on Friday, finished in fourth: “It wasn’t an easy qualifying session. We faced the difficulties we expected. In the first sector, it was very tricky and inconsistent, but we knew that would be an issue.”
“We had to survive this qualifying and focus on tomorrow. Third and fourth isn’t too bad. There might have been a little more to find on that last lap, but it would have been between Carlos and me. The two ahead were simply too fast.”
