George Russell barely escaped a potentially catastrophic crash with Sergio Pérez, surviving by a mere half centimeter.
George Russell and Sergio Pérez came close to a major accident at Monza, as the Mercedes F1 driver pulled alongside his rival to overtake. When asked if he enjoyed the duel, the initiator of the maneuver expressed skepticism about the term.
“I’m not sure ‘fun’ is the right word, as I thought I was going to take off when he squeezed me at 340 km/h,” Russell stated. “But yes, it was a tough race and I was at least happy to gain a position.”
The British driver confirmed that an accident with his rival was very close: “It was right on the edge. We didn’t crash and I got past, but a half centimeter more and it would have been a different story.”
Mercedes team director Toto Wolff agreed with Russell that Perez’s late trajectory was on the verge of being acceptable: “It was a move under braking. Was the gap sufficient, while it was minimal? But the move was made late.”
