Russell's Car Flunks Weight Test at Spa

Spa Stunner: Russell Faces Disqualification!

28/07/2024

George Russell faces likely disqualification at Spa as his car fails to meet the FIA’s minimum weight requirements.

Shock at Spa for Mercedes and Formula 1: George Russell, the race winner, faces likely disqualification for non-compliant weight.

Unless the team can justify a significant weight loss, which seems challenging at this stage, Russell will have to cede his victory to Hamilton!

The FIA states: “After the race, car number 63 was weighed and recorded a weight of 798.0 kg, which is the minimum required under Article 4.1 of the Technical Regulations. Subsequently, fuel was drained from the car, and 2.8 litres were removed.”

“The car was not fully drained according to the draining procedure submitted by the team in its legality documents, as Article 6.5.2 of the Technical Regulations was met. The car was weighed again on the FIA’s internal and external scales, and the weight was 796.5 kg.”

“The calibration of both internal and external scales was confirmed and noted by the competitor.”

“As this weight is 1.5 kg below the minimum required by Article 4.1 of the Technical Regulations, which must also be maintained at all times during the competition, this matter has been referred to the Sporting Stewards for their consideration.”
