George Russell shares his thoughts on Mercedes possibly signing Verstappen and expresses confidence in his own ability to compete with anyone.
George Russell: ‘I Can Beat Anyone on the Grid’
George Russell wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes F1 tried to recruit Max Verstappen by 2026. In fact, the Mercedes driver even admits he would understand if his team pursued the best driver on the grid and four-time world champion.
“Why wouldn’t they want to sign Max? It makes complete sense,” Russell told PA. “He’s the best right now. He’s a four-time world champion. This isn’t about me or Kimi.”
“Each team has two drivers, and he’s just one person. So, it doesn’t bother me at all, because performance is my focus. Right now, I believe I’m just as competitive as anyone else on the grid.”
Despite sharing a team with Lewis Hamilton, Russell isn’t concerned: “I’m very happy. Many drivers have contracts, but the reality is, if you’re not performing, teams will find a way to move you on.”
“When the time comes, we’ll discuss a contract. I think those who worry too much about not having a contract or the uncertainty are the ones who lack self-belief. I have immense confidence in myself.”
“I’ve been a teammate to a world champion for three years, the greatest of all time. I truly believe I can beat anyone if given the right opportunity, and that’s what gives us our strength.”
