Mercedes F1 secures the third row in Mexico, with Russell content after recovery, while Hamilton expresses frustration with car performance.
The Mercedes F1 drivers will occupy the third row at the start of the Mexican Grand Prix, with George Russell in fifth place. Russell expressed satisfaction at his recovery following his crash in FP2, though he remains cautious about his race prospects.
“A different one from yesterday, as yesterday’s was broken! I’m very happy with this comeback. We’ve got parts that are 12 races old, my lap was very solid, I was a tenth away from third place, and after yesterday’s events, I’ll take it,” Russell stated.
“I don’t know what it means for the race. Checo and Piastri are out of position, so fifth place was the best we could hope for. But with the three teams ahead fighting it out, maybe the race could turn in our favour.”
Lewis Hamilton did not hide his frustration after experiencing a Mercedes in qualifying that felt vastly different from the one in practice: “The car felt good in FP3, I didn’t change anything, and in qualifying, it was all over the place. It’s a frustrating session, but that’s been the case for every qualifying I’ve had this year.”
The seven-time world champion finished on the podium last year despite starting from the third row, but he dismissed any similar prospects for this race: “There’s no chance of us achieving that with the car we have this year. Maybe George will have a better car, and we’ll try to understand things for the future.”
