Russell Leads Charge as Mercedes Find Their Groove

Mercedes on the Rise Ahead of Japan GP Test

Mercedes eyes a third straight podium as the W16 proves its pace. Suzuka’s challenge will show if they’re truly back.

Two races, two podiums, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team is off to its strongest start in years. With the W16 showing real promise and George Russell in top form, there’s a growing sense that the Silver Arrows are back in business.

But the real test begins now.

As the team heads into a demanding triple-header, Team Principal Toto Wolff remains focused but cautious:

“Our aim is to build on this solid start over the next three Grands Prix,” he said. “The W16 has proven to be a consistent and stable platform so far, giving our drivers the confidence to deliver strong performances in Australia and China. It’s been our best season start since 2021.”

Still, Wolff knows there’s a long road ahead.

“If we want to fight at the very front, there’s still work to be done. Progress doesn’t happen overnight. These next races, Japan, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, will be all about maximizing what we’ve got. Our rivals will bounce back. We need to be at our absolute best to keep the momentum going.”

Next up: Suzuka.

One of the most iconic circuits on the calendar, Suzuka is known for its fast-flowing corners and dramatic elevation changes. It’s a true challenge for both driver and machine.

“This will be Kimi Antonelli’s first time racing here,” Wolff noted. “It’s a big step, but he’s taken every challenge in stride so far. We’re excited to see how he handles this one.”

Meanwhile, George Russell continues to shine.

“This is the strongest start to George’s F1 career,” Wolff added. “He’s been composed, consistent, and quick, everything we expect from a Mercedes senior driver. He’ll be looking to carry that form into Japan this weekend.”
