Mercedes F1 unexpectedly seized the front row at Silverstone, sparking celebrations within the team.
George Russell clinched pole position at the British Grand Prix, where Mercedes F1 dominated the front row, and British drivers locked out the top three at home, with Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris following closely. The day’s hero was overwhelmed as he secured his second pole in four races and his team made a strong comeback.
“What a feeling! At the beginning of the year, we couldn’t have dreamt of being in pole position. And here we are, first and second with Lewis, and Lando in third, it’s fantastic. The fans in the stands gave us so much energy, thank you for that!” Russell exclaimed.
“The car is just so good right now! It came alive in qualifying, and honestly, it’s a joy to drive here. We’re riding the wave at the moment, excited, but looking ahead to tomorrow, it’s going to be tight with Lando, and Max [Verstappen, 4th] will be fast, but it’s thrilling!”
He now hopes to convert this result in tomorrow’s race: “The crowd gives so much energy, I think Silverstone couldn’t have imagined us three finishing in the top three. The support is massive, we love it so much, and I can’t wait for tomorrow.”
Hamilton meanwhile made a point to thank the crowd for the energy that has been transmitted to the local stage throughout the weekend. The seven-time world champion also thanks his team for the progress on the W15, and he praised his teammate for the pole position. The aim is for a victory and a one-two for Mercedes tomorrow.
“First of all, a huge thanks to this crowd, I’m proud to be here, and it’s incredible that we’re three Britons in the top three. Huge congratulations to George, he did an incredible job. We didn’t expect the front row this weekend, it’s huge for the team. The car was fantastic, and the whole team deserves it,” said Hamilton.
“I think the car was very good, it was about getting the tyres in the right window at the right time, and nailing the laps when we had the time on track. I lacked a bit of performance that George managed to find, but I’m very confident. And with these conditions, we can work together to keep Lando behind.”
