George Russell opens up about the shockwaves Hamilton’s Ferrari move sent through Mercedes, recalling how the unexpected news first reached him.
George Russell shared how he first learned that Lewis Hamilton would be leaving Mercedes F1 to join Ferrari in early 2024. Now the leading driver at Brackley, he recalls the first rumor he heard on the matter, which immediately made a strong impression within the team.
“To be honest, it wasn’t just a whisper I heard—it was actually the first time I’d heard it,” Russell told Virgin Radio. “It was quite surprising, to be honest, because these things usually have a way of spreading through the media, and this was just a true bombshell.”
“But ultimately, these things happen for a reason. We’re entering a new era in Formula 1. The sport is growing bigger and bigger. And I think it’s a good thing for everyone.”
Russell holds very positive memories of his three seasons alongside Hamilton: “It was great, to be honest. I mean, for me, having a seven-time world champion as a teammate was a huge opportunity to prove what I’m capable of.”
“But I also learned how he managed the team, how he kept morale high during tough times, and how he always made time for the fans. It wasn’t an easy position for him, given his stature, but when it came down to a face-to-face, he was truly a great guy.”
“It’s kind of the end of an era for him and the team, but I think it’s an exciting opportunity—you know, for him as well, and an interesting one for the sport, but also for me, for Kimi, for Mercedes. So, you know, I think it’s good for everyone.”
