George Russell defied a tough weekend to secure P3 in Miami, using smart racecraft and composure to outpace faster rivals.
Against the odds, Mercedes driver George Russell secured an unexpected third-place finish at the Miami Grand Prix, showing calm under pressure and smart race strategy.
After a tough start to the weekend and a disappointing qualifying session, Russell made the most of a strong opening stint and a well-timed Virtual Safety Car to jump into podium contention. His performance brings him closer to Max Verstappen in the championship standings.
“I’m really happy with third,” Russell said after the race. “It was a challenging weekend for me. I was struggling and off the pace, but when it mattered, I took my chance. The McLarens were way ahead earlier, so to finish on the podium feels great.”
He capitalized on the Virtual Safety Car to make his only pit stop, rejoining ahead of Verstappen and managing to hold off the Red Bull in the closing stages.
Adding a bit of humor to the day, Russell joked about a light-hearted incident with fellow Brit Lando Norris during the pre-race driver parade.
“I kept my cool in the car and managed to keep Max behind. Lando’s actually a bit mad at me. We had a crash in those Lego cars before the race and I accidentally hit his leg. I’m not sure if he’ll let that one go!”
