Mercedes drivers express frustration with Interlagos bumps, impacting pace and leaving Russell assessing team position as fitting yet challenging.
George Russell qualified sixth in the Sprint at Interlagos, with the Mercedes F1 driver admitting he struggled, particularly due to the bumps on the track. However, he expressed his fondness for the Sprint format and hopes for a positive weekend ahead.
“I think it was the same for everyone; the track is so bumpy—I don’t know what happened with the resurfacing. It was a challenging session as the temperature kept dropping, but sixth place is probably a fair reflection of where we stand. It could be better, but it could be worse,” admitted the Briton.
Russell now looks forward to a strong Sprint performance: “I’m excited because we’re at the back of the front group, with a bit of a buffer from the pack behind. I enjoy Sprint weekends as there’s action from Friday, which makes it fun.”
Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, sounded less content in reflecting on his day, despite feeling the car had improved compared to free practice: “Pretty poor, but that’s been the case with all my qualifying sessions lately, so it’s not that I’m happy—I don’t feel confident in the car, and it’s been quite difficult,” said the seven-time world champion.
“It was pretty bad; they resurfaced the track but didn’t do a very good job. In free practice, it felt like Baku 2022 in terms of bouncing down the straights for us. We raised the car, and it improved somewhat, so it’s not painful, but bouncing in the corners makes the car hard to handle.”
Somewhat resigned, the seven-time champion looks to make gains through the weekend: “It’s just how it is; I’m not overly optimistic, but if I can move up in the Sprint, that’ll be something. I’ll try to do better in qualifying, make some changes to the car, and see what comes of it.”
