George Russell admits struggles on mediums as rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli grabs headlines with brilliant pole in Miami’s F1 Sprint showdown.
George Russell had a shot at pole position in today’s F1 Sprint in Miami, but a lack of confidence with the Pirelli tyres cost him. The Mercedes driver could only manage P5 after a tricky final qualifying segment.
Despite the disappointment, Russell showed real sportsmanship by immediately congratulating his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, who clinched pole for Saturday’s Sprint race.
“Big congratulations to Kimi. I’m really happy for him. He’s done an incredible job today and was fast from the start. Really impressive,” said Russell.
“I struggled a bit out there. I didn’t feel completely comfortable on the medium tyres during SQ1 and SQ2,” he explained.
“For SQ3, we decided to head out early in the session. I wasn’t feeling confident, and we thought there might be a yellow or red flag later on that could work in our favor.”
“P5 isn’t great, and there’s still work to do on my side. But it’s a fantastic result for Kimi and for the whole team.”
