The Dutch King supports the F1 Grand Prix. Now, the political elite must decide its fate.
The King of the Netherlands has backed the survival of the Dutch GP.
Formula 1 is ready to seal a new deal with Zandvoort beyond 2025, though race organizers are hesitant for financial reasons.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stated during the Dutch GP weekend that a potential solution for the event could be a new system starting in 2026 where some European races would alternate each year.
“I am convinced that this place has a future,” the Italian said. “They deserve it.”
Zandvoort’s director, Robert van Overdijk, responded: “We are proud that Stefano says he is absolutely convinced it will continue after 2025.”
“There is no final agreement yet. There is still work to be done. We are not opposed to taking some risks, we have shown that, but they must be acceptable risks with which we are comfortable.”
“It will happen when we feel that the interest of our sponsors, partners, and ticket buyers is as high as it has been in recent years.”
Several influential Dutch politicians were present at the Dutch GP, and another very notable presence was that of the King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander.
“One often hears positive stories abroad about the Grand Prix here at Zandvoort and it is clear that this race is an example for all of Formula 1,” he said.
“Should they continue after 2025? I do not decide, but it would be great if this race continued as long as possible. It’s fantastic publicity for the Netherlands. I hope the political class of this country will rally to save the race.”
Although no longer hosting the event every year would be a setback, an alternating scheme would at least allow the Formula 1 race at Zandvoort to continue.
“The order of things is that we must first determine if it is an acceptable risk for us,” said van Overdijk when asked about the contractual options. “Then, you consult the FOM to see what form it takes.”
“Domenicali says he is giving us until the end of the year to continue discussions. The FOM knows we still have a lot of work to do.”
“I do not see it as a strict deadline, but the fact that you have the necessary space to do it shows that they are satisfied with us. A decision really does not need to be made in the coming weeks.”
