Perez teams up with Richard Wood for the upcoming Grands Prix as Hugh Bird steps aside.
Sergio Perez will soon collaborate with a temporary new race engineer from the Dutch Formula 1 Grand Prix at Zandvoort, as his current engineer, Hugh Bird, prepares to take paternity leave.
While Bird will be present at Zandvoort this weekend overseeing operations, Richard Wood will step in to replace him as Perez’s race engineer.
Wood brings 11 years of experience within Red Bull to the role and will temporarily relinquish his position as performance engineer. In his stead, simulator performance engineer Richard Cooke will take over.
Wood and Cooke are set to assume their temporary roles for the upcoming four Grands Prix, including the night race in Singapore from September 20 to 22.
Perez finds himself at a pivotal moment in his Formula 1 career as he fights to retain his seat at Red Bull. He had a rough patch before the summer break, scoring only 28 points across eight races, leading to speculation that he might be replaced by Daniel Ricciardo after the Belgian GP.
However, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko have granted Perez a reprieve, giving him the next series of races to show improvement.
The Mexican might find some comfort knowing that two of the next four races will be held at circuits he particularly favours, namely Baku and Singapore, where he has previously topped the podium.
