Hamilton’s Silverstone Win Fuels Hungary Hopes

19/07/2024

After a triumphant Silverstone victory, Lewis Hamilton aims to extend his success at the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton revealed that he felt a “complete change” in his demeanor since ending his long Formula 1 victory drought at the British Grand Prix.

Hamilton clinched a record ninth win at Silverstone, breaking a 945-day winless streak in F1.

The Briton, who will leave Mercedes for Ferrari, admitted post-race that the elusive wait made him question whether his 104th win would ever materialize.

However, Hamilton stated that his long-awaited return to the top had rejuvenated him as he tries to maintain that momentum at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

When asked if he noticed a difference during the week following this historic victory, Hamilton responded, “I think we’ll see over the rest of the year.”

“I would definitely say that my body language and energy have distinctly shifted last week. I still don’t know what lies ahead and I’m just trying to prepare as best as I can. I suppose it just shows that anything is possible.”

“We need to keep pushing, still. There will be turbulence ahead, I’m sure, but also the possibility of good days.”

Hamilton acknowledged that he wasn’t sure if he could end his tenure at Mercedes on a high note, but consecutive victories at the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone have helped rejuvenate the team’s spirits.

“It all started with Mercedes and I just wanted to finish on a high note. We weren’t sure if we would get there in terms of results. We didn’t know that at this stage of the season, we would be fighting for wins. We are so grateful to be doing so. A huge, huge boost.”

“I think the spirit we set, the spirit we have, never left this team. But when you try and try and fail, it’s tough on everyone.”

“I would say it has probably rejuvenated everyone in the team, here and at the factory, what’s possible and that the hard work is really starting to pay off.”

“We are seeing a huge surge of energy, and it’s filtering through us, so I hope that will continue to be reflected in our results.”

Mercedes was competitive at the Hungaroring even during its dry spell, securing pole position in both the 2022 and 2023 races. With the current form being much improved?

“We have a much better race car now than last year, so I’m not exactly sure how competitive we will be this weekend. We’ll be stronger than last year, but I think the battle will be tight between us and our rivals.”

“Red Bull still has a slight edge over us, but we’ll find out tomorrow, I suppose. And yes, we have a much better race pace than in the past.”

“Challenges? We’ve turned a bad car into a good car, I think that was a big hurdle. It was really bad. That’s over now.”

However, the seven-time world champion dismisses the idea that returning to a low-speed configuration would provide a real test of where Mercedes stands.

“I don’t think that’s the ultimate test. I think every weekend has been the ultimate test of sheer will within our team. We certainly don’t want to rush. I think that’s key to our approach.”

“But also, the dice are cast, we are fighting, we are chasing, and we’ll try to win as many races as possible. It may be that this weekend, Red Bull is still ahead, or McLaren is still ahead, who knows?”

“But I think what we have shown over the past few races is that with determination, real focus, and a constant pursuit of perfection and improvement, you can make a difference.”

“We are united as a team and we are going to try to make sure we finish the season on a high note. And if we can lift the team to the top level in the constructors’ championship, if we can advance, we won’t be too far behind the drivers ahead of us, so it would be great to also put pressure on them.”
