Verstappen Probes ERS Failure’s Impact on Season

08/06/2024

Exploring Verstappen’s quest to gauge the fallout from his ERS malfunction at the Canadian GP amid Red Bull’s turbulent day.

Red Bull had a challenging first day in Montreal, with the Canadian Grand Prix practice disrupted by a mechanical issue on Max Verstappen’s RB20. The Dutch driver experienced an ERS malfunction and was barely able to drive during the first session.

“Unfortunately, in FP2, I didn’t do many laps. There was a suspicion of an electrical problem, so they told me to stay in the pits and they are investigating. I haven’t returned to the garage yet, but I’m sure we will soon understand what it’s about,” Verstappen stated. “It’s not ideal. I would have liked to do more laps.”

“Others did a few more laps in the dry, a few more now in the wet. So it’s certainly not the way I would have liked to start FP2. But I think it’s more important to understand what actually happened and what the implications will be for this weekend or the rest of the year.”

Sergio Pérez finished the day in the top 10, though he did not show very convincing pace during the FP2 session. Red Bull does not seem to be up to speed at the start of the weekend: “I think the day was very tricky with the conditions we had.”

“I think it will be very important tomorrow to be on the track at the right time. We could see that the track was already changing a lot if you were not pushing at the right lap, it could make a big difference.”

“We felt the car, we have an idea of the car, but I think it is very difficult to draw conclusions on a track that was dominated by the weather conditions.”
