Red Bull’s RB20 No Exception in F1 Challenges

RB20 Faces Same Hurdles as Rivals, Says Monaghan

18/07/2024

Red Bull’s RB20 grapples with familiar issues, echoing the broader F1 field’s challenges.

Paul Monaghan, the chief engineer at Red Bull, acknowledges that his team must advance in the coming months if they are to remain the benchmark, especially with teams like McLaren F1 and Mercedes rapidly regaining prominence. He notes that the RB20 is not exempt from issues other teams face.

“If you consider our lap time as a criterion, it’s a competitive car. And we’ve had a good start to the season, which is nice. But it’s clear we’re experiencing a bit more pressure now,” Monaghan stated on the Beyond The Grid podcast, before discussing the team’s single-seater concept.

“As for its strengths and weaknesses, I think I was asked last year what made it so good. It has the same problems as the other cars. They might be less significant, and we might be able to extract a bit more lap time.”

“They all share the same characteristics in terms of behavior at entry, mid-corner behavior, and stability on exit. Unless we are allowed to enter other garages, do debriefings, and consult data, it’s very difficult to judge.”

Monaghan is not yet worried about the resurgence of competition against Red Bull, as he believes the team can continue to learn from its previous single-seaters. He is unsure of the RB20 and future RB21’s potential for improvement, but he remains confident.

“You apply a degree of subjective assessment, and I would say our car still possesses its inherent strengths from the previous year. The elements we focused on when we decided to create this generation of cars are still there, and they seem to serve us well.”

“But are we reaching some kind of asymptote of the rules? I don’t know. There are brilliantly intelligent people in Milton Keynes who will find ways to redesign parts and make them a bit better, and we’ll see how far we go in the coming months and next year.”
