Max Verstappen believes recent challenges have revitalized Red Bull’s strive for perfection in racing.
Max Verstappen continues to believe his team missed the mark in Hungary, particularly in terms of strategy. The Red Bull driver is aware that it’s difficult to always be at the top of his game, but he feels justified in expressing his frustration about this.
“From my side, I think it was clear that the strategy wasn’t right, and I am very motivated, as is everyone in the team, to try to be perfect,” the triple world champion stated.
“I now know that it is very, very hard to achieve this in every race. I think we were very close last year. But when things don’t go as they should, I think it’s completely normal to share your frustration. And that’s what I did.”
Verstappen also sent a message to all his colleagues about the team’s situation: “I hope that with the recent performances, anyway, everyone is now fully awake, and we are always in the process of improving and optimizing the car a bit more. I just hope that we can improve the situation we are currently in.”
Verstappen still hopes for progress this weekend, as the team continues to understand the developments: “Looking at the weekend, there are always some things you could have done differently, with the settings maybe, and some other things we need to explore as well. So yes, I certainly hope we learn a bit more.”
“I’m not saying they didn’t work, maybe we just didn’t get everything out of them that we should have. So yes, we are going to try to have, in a way, a smoother weekend now, even though it’s not going to be easy with the penalty. If we can find a bit more balance with the car than what we had in Hungary.”
Verstappen acknowledges that McLaren F1 is a threat to Red Bull, and he explains how he plans to contend: “They are the dominant force and they keep winning, that’s for sure. But in the end, we need to focus on ourselves, right?”
“Because I think we can do better in terms of optimizing the car’s performance. So that’s where my attention is. You have the championship in the back of your mind. But I think we need to focus first on finding a bit more performance in the car.”
