Red Bull's Misstep RB20 Worsened by Updates—Marko

Marko: Updates Have Made RB20 “Considerably Worse”

19/09/2024

Dr. Helmut Marko admits that recent updates have significantly harmed the performance of the Red Bull RB20, stating that even a small misstep can have major consequences in the highly competitive Formula 1 field.

Red Bull is making strenuous efforts and leaving nothing to chance to recover from the Formula 1 team’s current drop in performance.

McLaren overtook the reigning champions in Baku and now holds a 20-point lead in the constructors’ standings, which is practically impossible to catch up, according to Dr. Helmut Marko.

“It will be difficult,” said the team’s advisor upon his arrival in Singapore.

“McLaren has a car that works on all circuits. We must focus on Max (Verstappen) and the drivers’ championship.”

Verstappen still holds a 59-point lead over Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings, and the team is determined to do everything possible to stay ahead.

For example, while the sister team RB F1 is using a special denim-inspired livery in Singapore this weekend, Red Bull Racing has abandoned its own special livery project—due to the weight of the paint.

Red Bull specified that the planned livery for Singapore would have added an extra kilogram to the car—which represents 0.03 seconds per lap.

“We are eliminating variables and will stick to the known weight. With this generation of cars, the margin is so fine that a single misstep is enough. And our updates have made the car considerably worse,” adds Marko.

“This kind of negative spiral happened to Ferrari, and it happened to Aston Martin. And now to us.”

“But thank God, we have recognized our mistake and are correcting it with parts planned for Austin.”

Marko also admits that the loss of personnel has had an effect.

“We must not forget that some very good employees have left us. Success simply arouses desire, but the truth is that we can only fill each leadership or engineering position once.”

“We have to allow people to accept that other teams can offer them a better position with more money. We just have to make sure the structure remains united.”
