Helmut Marko acknowledges Red Bull’s misstep in promoting Liam Lawson, revealing the pressures and challenges the New Zealander faced this season.
Marko, Red Bull’s advisor, has admitted that promoting Liam Lawson alongside Max Verstappen for 2025 was a mistake, both for him and the team.
While many in the F1 world questioned and even criticized Red Bull’s decision to bypass Yuki Tsunoda during the winter months, the team now recognizes that the Kiwi driver did not perform well with the RB21.
Though there’s no guarantee that things will go better with the Japanese driver, Marko is openly acknowledging his error.
“Yuki was too inconsistent, which is why we unanimously decided on Lawson,” Marko explained when asked if there had been differing opinions on who should replace Sergio Perez.
“However, Liam struggled under pressure from the very first day in Australia.”
Marko admits it quickly became clear that Lawson was out of his depth.
“Then he got caught in a downward spiral. It’s like a boxer getting beaten down – it’s hard to recover from that.”
“In hindsight, it was a mistake to choose Liam.”
