Red Bull's Horner Earns Most, Surpassing Wolff & Brown

Horner Tops F1 Pay Ranks, Leaves Rivals Far Behind

Christian Horner cements his place as Formula 1’s best-paid, despite a turbulent year on and off the track.

Horner has firmly established himself as the highest-paid team principal in Formula 1, at least in terms of direct salary earnings.

Horner’s remuneration rose to £8.92 million—equivalent to €10.8 million annually—in 2023, as disclosed by Red Bull Racing’s financial statements. This impressive figure secures his position as the best-compensated team leader on the grid. Compared to 2022, Horner’s salary saw an 11% increase in 2023 (up from €9.6 million the previous year).

Although 2024 has presented formidable challenges both on and off the track for Horner and Red Bull, there is little indication that his salary will be affected.

Meanwhile, Dr. Helmut Marko, the team’s senior advisor, earned £7 million (€8.4 million) in 2023. However, Horner’s financial standing does not make him the wealthiest figure in the F1 paddock.

His rival, Toto Wolff, reportedly draws a salary of around £6 million (€7.2 million) but holds a one-third stake in Mercedes-Benz, yielding an estimated £25 million (€30 million) in dividends last year alone. Wolff, in fact, joined the billionaire ranks in the previous year.

As for McLaren’s CEO Zak Brown, he is thought to receive a similar base salary to Horner but does not serve as McLaren F1’s team principal, a role held by Andrea Stella, who earns €4 million. Brown, however, took home an additional £17.4 million in bonuses in 2023.
