Red Bull's Horner Calls for RB20 Spa Upgrades

Horner: Urgent Fixes Needed for RB20 at Spa

22/07/2024

Christian Horner states Red Bull must refine RB20 upgrades for enhanced performance at Spa.

Red Bull didn’t have an easy weekend in Hungary, with Max Verstappen finishing fifth and Sergio Pérez seventh. Their director, Christian Horner, explains that both drivers having to concede a position for different reasons complicated their race.

“It didn’t work out for us in Hungary,” Horner admits. “We experienced understeer, and then losing that position at the start and giving up the spot to Lando affected us. We tried to set the pace with Max, but to no avail.”

“At certain points in the race, we were competitive, but there’s a lot to review to see how we can improve and come back stronger next weekend.”

“Checo had a good race and his strategy, doing the undercut on George, worked well. He also showed good pace, made some good overtakes, and I hope this gives him the confidence to perform well at Spa.”

“We have a lot of work to do to study the RB20’s updates before Belgium. We definitely won’t be able to review everything in time, but we’ll need to implement some fixes.”

The discord at McLaren wasn’t a ‘Multi 21’ redux

Asked about the team orders at McLaren, with Lando Norris instructed to give back a position that cost Oscar Piastri, Horner believes the team was at fault for this situation and it wasn’t similar to the famous Multi 21 incident disobeyed by Sebastian Vettel in 2013.

“It’s different, in my view. It’s a tricky position. I didn’t understand why they didn’t give Oscar the first pit stop, so they put themselves in this position. It was something they had discussed before the race and Lando did what he was asked.”

“They didn’t need to make life so complicated; they were in a fairly comfortable situation, they chose to bring Lando in two laps earlier, but the usual practice is to pit the lead car first.”

“Then they went through a lot of trouble to rectify the situation at the end of the race. So yes, it’s obviously their business, but they might not have needed to create this problem. The interest of the drivers versus the interest of the team, there’s always a conflict.”
