Red Bull Unfazed by Verstappen's Sim Sessions

Horner, Marko Cool on Max’s Simulator Time

Despite concerns, Red Bull bosses remain unfazed by Max Verstappen’s extended simulator sessions, dismissing any links to mood issues.

Max Verstappen was in a foul mood throughout the weekend in Hungary, starting from the moment free practice began.

The Red Bull driver is clearly unhappy with the evolved RB20, both in terms of balance and performance. Fixes are necessary, according to Christian Horner, but the team assures that data has shown the upgrades are more effective.

After qualifying, however, Verstappen called on his team to “wake up.” And some played on this word in the paddock in light of Max’s grim mood during and after the race.

Could it be that he got up on the wrong side of the bed that Sunday? Indeed, he had driven in his motorhome on his simulator until 3:30 AM for a stint in the virtual 24 Hours of Spa!

Dr. Marko smiles when asked the question.

“He stayed up even longer at Imola, I don’t know how many hours of sleep he had, and he won the race (the virtual 24 Hours of Nurburgring).”

“Max has a different rhythm from mine or others, and the time he went to bed is nothing out of the ordinary for him. He didn’t even wake up at 10 AM at Zandvoort when helicopters flew over his motorhome. He gets his quota of sleep. He got it as usual. It’s nonsense, therefore, to say that he woke up in a bad mood.”

“Max has been harsh with a lot of people, inside the team and out. We will ensure that everything is discussed, but internally. The more time in individual meetings, the better.”

Christian Horner also reacted to the fact that his driver might be spending too much time on his simulator during Grands Prix weekends. Because, between official virtual races, he also trains extensively.

“I think people jump to conclusions too quickly, but Max knows what is necessary for him in terms of workload and we trust his judgment on this.”

“He knows what it takes to drive an F1 in a Grand Prix, to win Grands Prix and to be a world champion. And we always work as a team. As for discussions on how to improve, they will never be done through the media.”
