Red Bull Uncertain Ahead of Verstappen’s Home GP

Verstappen’s Zandvoort GP Faces Doubts, Says Marko

19/08/2024

Concerns arise as Red Bull gears up for a challenging home GP for Verstappen at Zandvoort, with critical upgrades yet to prove effective.

Red Bull Racing is uncertain about providing Max Verstappen with a car capable of dominating the upcoming Grand Prix.

The forthcoming race is particularly significant as it is the home event for the Dutch driver, taking place in Zandvoort, Netherlands, this weekend.

The team is still figuring out how to optimise the upgrades introduced in Hungary, which have not appeared to enhance the performance of the RB20. Following this, Verstappen has called on his team to “wake up.”

McLaren F1 and Mercedes F1 have since capitalized on the chaotic weekends faced by Red Bull and Verstappen, a trend that could continue post-break, according to advisor Dr. Helmut Marko.

“F1 was on hiatus, meaning no work could be carried out on the car. The opportunity to address the car’s weaknesses was severely limited before the race at Zandvoort.”

“We need to identify our issues and pinpoint where the problems lie as we’ve lost the car’s balance compared to the situation in the first three races.”

“It’s hard to predict how quickly we can rectify this. I don’t think the ultimate solution will come at Zandvoort. We are thinking deeply and have various ideas, but I cannot yet say what we will implement and how.”

Marko, however, remains confident that Verstappen will once again overcome some of the car’s deficiencies. But will it be enough to dominate as in the past three editions?

“One thing is certain, qualifying at Zandvoort will be crucial as overtaking is almost impossible.”

“Max might well achieve a strong qualifying since he has performed well there recently. We were the fastest in Austria and also at Spa. In Hungary, we were only a few hundredths of a second off, so while we do complain, the level remains very high.”
