Red Bull’s approach for Colapinto faces hurdles as Williams defends its long-term vision amidst an “unusual situation,” says Helmut Marko.
It is unlikely that Franco Colapinto will be driving a Red Bull-owned F1 car in 2025, revealed Dr Helmut Marko. However, the Austrian did confirm the reports we brought to you exclusively this weekend, indicating that Red Bull indeed approached Williams F1 regarding a potential transfer.
Red Bull made an offer to Williams for the Argentine rookie, who has impressed since stepping in for Logan Sargeant. However, this offer was declined as it involved Colapinto leaving the Williams driver programme, which James Vowles opposed.
“It’s an unusual situation,” stated Red Bull’s F1 advisor.
“He didn’t particularly stand out in any junior category. Of course, he was good, but not exceptional.”
“But what struck us was his steely determination, even when he was thrown in at the deep end like Liam Lawson.”
Marko openly acknowledged the approach to Williams F1.
“In Formula 1, everyone talks to everyone.”
He did, however, admit that Red Bull and Colapinto are unlikely to reach an agreement for 2025.
“The problem with him is that he has a long-term contract with Williams.”
He noted that James Vowles had suggested the possibility of loaning Colapinto to a rival team, “but that isn’t appealing to any team,” insisted Marko.
“We are also in a strong position with our own junior drivers. We are not going to develop a driver for another team.”
