Christian Horner rejects McLaren’s accusations, asserting Red Bull’s full compliance with FIA regulations on its car’s ride height system.
Christian Horner has responded to the latest accusations from Zak Brown, stressing that Red Bull is “completely at ease” with the FIA’s investigation into its controversial ride height adjustment system in Formula 1.
Discussions in the Austin paddock have centred around this system installed on the Red Bull, which first drew attention in Singapore.
Several rival teams, McLaren in particular, have raised concerns that Red Bull may be able to adjust the front ride height of its car in parc fermé, which would violate F1 regulations and provide a performance advantage.
Addressing the matter for the first time, Horner stated that the FIA is “satisfied” after inspecting the system’s operation in Austin.
“Every car has a tool to adjust the front of the floor. Ours is located in front of the floor and has been there for over three years. You have to remove pedals and other panels and pipes to access it, so it’s like any other adjustment on the car. It would be easier to adjust an anti-roll bar at the rear than to get to this component. It’s all part of the front chassis package, which needs to be dismantled,” he explained.
“I think one of our rivals (McLaren) has complained a bit, but it’s the FIA’s job to look into these things. It’s on the open-source components list, so it has been public for three years. The FIA is satisfied, and that addresses some of the paranoia elsewhere in the paddock.”
“Sometimes, maybe to deflect attention from what’s happening on your own side, you try to start a fire elsewhere. There’s been a lot of noise about that rival’s rear wings… It’s part of Formula 1, and I’m sure other incidents will arise before we reach Abu Dhabi.”
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has called for “massive consequences” if the FIA’s investigation finds Red Bull guilty of using the system in parc fermé conditions.
However, Horner remains adamant that Red Bull has done nothing wrong.
“It’s actually a conversation we had with the FIA in Singapore. The FIA has since looked at the system, and they are more than satisfied. Completely satisfied.”
“There are probably 600 components on a car that are fully adjustable. Everyone can adjust these components. What you can’t do is adjust them during parc fermé. That’s what hasn’t happened. It would be far easier to adjust many other things than to remove the pedals to access this setting. We have cameras monitoring the cars, we have technical stewards and witnesses overseeing the cars. Our car has been subjected to more checks over the past three years than any other car in the pit lane. We are completely at ease.”
“We can seal every movable joint on the car. Parc fermé regulations require that nothing is changed, and we have fully adhered to all the rules and procedures. We are more than satisfied with the discussions we’ve had with the FIA and what was shown to them, and they are very comfortable with it.”
