Despite a challenging weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix, Dr Helmut Marko remains confident that Red Bull can turn their season around, as the team looks for radical solutions to their performance issues.
Dr Helmut Marko has expressed his strong confidence that Red Bull can get their season back on track, despite a challenging weekend so far at the Singapore Grand Prix.
During Friday’s practice sessions in Singapore, neither of the Red Bull drivers was content with their performance.
“We are still lacking a lot in balance,” stated Mexican driver Sergio Perez. “It’s quite tough to complete a lap, and it doesn’t look very promising at the moment. We’re almost a second off the pace.”
The team’s advisor, Dr Marko, acknowledged: “Nothing was working on Max’s car. At this moment, I would say the situation is quite alarming. On both soft and hard tyres, he’s lacking grip and balance. We need to try something radical.”
“When I checked, we were matching the pace of (Franco) Colapinto!”
“We haven’t managed to get the tyres up to temperature. Max struggled even more than Checo, possibly due to having slightly less downforce. Finding the key to this issue is crucial. We’ve tried many things, but to no avail. There is still a great deal of work to be done.”
However, there is a glimmer of hope, as Verstappen maintains a 59-point lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris in the drivers’ championship, and a significant car upgrade is planned for the next race in Austin.
“We must get through this dreadful Singapore race as best we can, but I am very confident for Austin.”
After the Azerbaijan race, Marko was quoted acknowledging that the constructors’ championship, now led by McLaren, is likely out of reach for Red Bull in 2024.
“I wouldn’t say it’s out of reach, but it will be very challenging against McLaren. I’ve always been forthright about this. They have two strong drivers and a car that performs well on every circuit.”
“But I am relieved by Max’s lead in the drivers’ standings. The recent races have been about damage limitation, but there’s no need for panic—even if some might prefer that.”
