Liam Lawson earns Red Bull promotion, teaming up with Max Verstappen for the 2025 Formula 1 season in a dynamic lineup.
It was expected: after dismissing Sergio Perez yesterday, Red Bull Racing has confirmed that Liam Lawson will complete its driver lineup for the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, leaving Racing Bulls to become the teammate of four-time world champion Max Verstappen.
The New Zealander joined the Red Bull Junior program in 2019 and, after multiple successes in junior formulae, made his Formula 1 debut with Scuderia AlphaTauri at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, stepping in for an injured Daniel Ricciardo. He scored his first championship points at his second outing in the Singapore Grand Prix and completed five races in total for the team. After taking on a reserve driver role for both teams at the start of 2024, Liam returned to Grand Prix racing with Racing Bulls and finished in the points at this year’s United States Grand Prix.
“Being named a Red Bull Racing driver is a lifelong dream come true for me; it’s something I’ve wished for and worked towards since I was eight years old,” says Liam Lawson.
“This journey has been incredible so far. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire Racing Bulls team for their support; the last six races have been crucial in preparing me for this next step. I also want to thank Christian, Helmut, and the entire Red Bull family for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I’m very excited to work alongside Max and to learn from a world champion. I’m sure his expertise will be invaluable. I can’t wait to get started!”
Christian Horner, Team Principal and CEO of Red Bull Racing, states, “I am delighted to announce that Liam Lawson will join the team in 2025.”
“Liam’s performances during his two stints with Racing Bulls have proven that he is not only capable of delivering strong results but is also a true racer who isn’t afraid to take on the best and make his mark.”
“His arrival continues the team’s long-standing tradition of promoting talent from within the Red Bull Junior program, following in the footsteps of championship and race-winning drivers like Sebastian Vettel and, of course, Max Verstappen. There’s no doubt that racing alongside Max, a four-time champion and undoubtedly one of the greatest drivers in F1 history, is a formidable challenge, but I am confident Liam can rise to it and deliver exceptional results next year.”
This marks a significant setback for Yuki Tsunoda. Racing Bulls is expected to soon announce his replacement, likely the Frenchman Isack Hadjar.
