Red Bull Likely to Retain Lawson - Audi Loan Off

Lawson’s Audi F1 Loan Doubtful; Red Bull to Keep Him

30/08/2024

Red Bull appears set to keep Kiwi racer Liam Lawson, dismissing the likelihood of an Audi F1 loan.

With Mattia Binotto trackside for the first time in his new colors at Monza, the question of the last vacant Formula 1 race seat for 2025 takes center stage.

Valtteri Bottas, the team’s incumbent, appears to be the frontrunner to join Nico Hulkenberg next year, in what will be the final season before the team transitions to Audi factory power and undergoes a complete rebranding for 2026.

However, Bottas is interested “only in a multi-year contract,” which Binotto is not keen on at the moment.

Rumors suggest Sauber/Audi F1 would prefer to sign Liam Lawson, and discussions have indeed taken place, as confirmed by Dr. Helmut Marko.

But Red Bull is not interested in the current terms proposed for this “loan,” which would be for one renewable year.

“We wanted to keep the option for him to be available when we need him in a year or two, or three… But Audi doesn’t seem to want that. So, no, it probably won’t be Sauber.”

Marko thus indirectly confirms that Lawson will need to be placed in one of the Red Bull Racing or RB F1 seats next year since Lawson can, by the end of September, leave the Red Bull fold and be free to sign with a Formula 1 team if he is not assured of a seat in 2025.
