Red Bull Racing‘s development driver, Jake Dennis, has warned the team’s Formula 1 competitors that they need to “find about a second per lap” to compete with the reigning champions in 2024.
The Milton-Keynes-based team has been dominating F1 since the return to ground effect aerodynamics in 2022, winning 39 out of the 44 races held over the past two seasons.
Last season, the 2023 Red Bull proved to be nearly untouchable, with the team winning all but one race to easily secure both championships.
Dennis, who tested the RB19 during the post-season tests in Abu Dhabi, revealed that he expects Red Bull and Verstappen to be tough to beat again this season.
Asked to provide insight into the development of the 2024 Red Bull RB20 in the simulator, Dennis stated, “We have yet another extremely fast race car within the Red Bull team.”
“I would expect us to become champions again, unless someone like Ferrari or Mercedes manages to gain about a second per lap overnight.”
“I think it’s going to be a pretty boring season in Formula 1 with Max likely dominating.”
This is a concerning omen for Ferrari and Mercedes, who are embarking on new F1 concepts. However, it was also expected as Red Bull’s advantage allowed them to halt the development of the RB19 earlier.
“I would be lying if I said we hadn’t shifted our focus to the 2024 car quite early,” Dennis admitted. “We did no further development on the 2023 car after Singapore.”
