Marko concedes Jos Verstappen’s remarks didn’t help as Red Bull continues to refine its team structure and strategy.
Dr. Helmut Marko continues to call for unity after a tumultuous few months for Red Bull Racing.
While Max Verstappen now feels more confident that the team is beginning to “understand” the reasons behind its recent performance dip, the turmoil surrounding the Christian Horner scandal has led to the departure of several key figures.
Max’s father, Jos, has openly blamed the team principal’s leadership style, but team advisor Marko admits that Jos Verstappen’s scathing public remarks were misguided.
“Let’s put it this way, they didn’t help either,” he told ORF, having already acknowledged that the death of founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2022 and the Horner scandal earlier this year were all part of the 2024 challenges (read here).
“But we sat down together and agreed that we need to stick together—we need to work as one in every area to win this championship.”
“That’s the way forward for the future as well, because it’s clear that if we don’t give Max a car he can win with, there could be long-term complications.”
“All top drivers have exit clauses in their contracts, and in this case, Max could also look for another option. He will drive where the package is the best.”
Following the power struggle in 2024, Horner managed to hold on to his position as team principal, but Marko says the post-Mateschitz structure is still taking shape.
“In terms of structure, Oliver Mintzlaff is responsible for F1, but also football, cycling, and various other things.”
Indeed, the energy drink company is set to purchase 15% of French football club Paris FC (the rising capital club, competitor to PSG), in addition to its other interests in football and hockey teams.
“Christian Horner oversees Red Bull Racing from an operational standpoint, but I would say the details are not yet finalized, as the system is still developing,” Marko concluded.
