Red Bull gains as Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes trade blows in a gripping Formula 1 points tussle.
Red Bull’s rivals, once dominant, are gradually closing the gap in 2024.
This is the clear conclusion drawn by Dr. Helmut Marko, the Austrian brand’s motorsport consultant, after Montreal.
“Miami, Imola, Monaco, Montreal, there are now several examples in a row showing that we are at the end of our domination,” Marko observes.
In fact, Max Verstappen has increased his championship lead in Montreal, but George Russell was on pole and the triple world champion only narrowly won over Lando Norris.
Marko admits that the 2024 titles are no longer a certainty.
“It will no longer be a clear story for us as our car and simulator have some weaknesses. But we are working hard to address them.”
“What is good for us is that the others are not consistent, so if everything goes normally for us, Max will be ahead.”
Indeed, Marko points out that McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes are starting to share the points, which saves Verstappen and Red Bull in the championships for now.
“The competition has gained ground, there is no doubt, but we are not worried as promising developments are coming according to our data.”
“McLaren was as strong in Canada as in previous GP weekends, Mercedes F1 was stronger, but Ferrari stumbled. These ups and downs can be explained by the car and the circuit, and by who manages to get the tires into the best temperature window according to conditions.”
“This whole situation is a big advantage for us as our direct pursuers are never the same. We don’t have one opponent, but three who are taking points off each other. I hope it stays that way.”
Ferrari, McLaren, and even Mercedes now seem to be potential winners for the remaining races of the season.
“We’ll see,” Marko adds. “The next three races will show how good the F1s really are.”
“Mercedes was strong last year in Barcelona and then it was no longer strong. So after Spielberg and Silverstone – two other true race circuits – we will then know where we really stand.”
“It is therefore during the three races in Spain, Austria, and England that we will have a clearer idea of the current state of strengths and weaknesses. These are classic tracks, whereas we have behind us atypical layouts – Miami, Imola, Monaco, Montreal.”
