Max Verstappen remains cautious, awaiting track feedback on Red Bull’s upgrades, hoping for crucial progress to secure his fourth title.
Max Verstappen is uncertain how the end of his season will unfold, as Red Bull has been outpaced by McLaren F1 in recent races. However, the three-time world champion is confident that the RB20 can improve enough for him to defend a fourth title.
“We’ll see! We’re trying to do our best, I’m trying to do my best, and we’ll see what happens,” Verstappen said in Austin, commenting on Red Bull’s upgrades.
“If we can make the car faster, it will be more comfortable because we’re currently lacking a bit. We have to take it step by step, as there are few races left.”
However, Verstappen warned that time is running out to properly implement the Austin package.
“I haven’t tested the upgrades in the simulator,” he admitted, “so it’s hard to say how I’ll feel on track. And with only 60 minutes of free practice due to the sprint, it’s tricky.”
“But I’m not thinking too much about defending or losing the title at this point. If the improvements work, I’ll be in a good mood; if they don’t, I think it will be very difficult for us.”
How confident is he about retaining his title by the end of the year?
“For me, it’s 50-50. Every race from now on is crucial. Of course, I want to win in the end, but we need to be competitive enough to do that. It’s as simple as that.”
“I want to win, but if we don’t, it won’t be a huge tragedy for me.”
