RB F1 drivers faced contrasting results in Sao Paulo, as Lawson excelled while Tsunoda struggled in a challenging Sprint qualifying session.
Liam Lawson delivered one of the standout performances in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix Sprint qualifying, securing an impressive eighth place. The RB F1 driver outpaced his teammate and even Sergio Pérez, his direct rival for a seat next season, and he was pleased to have reached SQ3.
“I’m very happy; it’s a good step forward. It’s positive because we’ve made progress since this morning. The track was incredibly challenging earlier, and everyone else improved too, so I’m delighted that what we did paid off,” Lawson stated.
“I’m pleased with everyone’s work in the team. It will be tough tomorrow, but we’ll aim for points. We struggled a bit this morning on longer runs, but we were on soft tyres, so anything’s possible. We’ll do our best, but it’ll be a tough race.”
Yuki Tsunoda, meanwhile, didn’t make it past SQ1 and was left somewhat baffled: “It was a difficult qualifying session, and I just didn’t have the pace. My lap felt pretty good, so I’m surprised to be so far down the grid. It’s more of a general feeling. My last attack lap should have put me in SQ3, yet here I am in 18th, so I’m definitely surprised.”
The Japanese driver isn’t brimming with confidence ahead of tomorrow’s Sprint: “I’m not sure what we’ll be able to achieve from 18th, but I’ll give it my all to move up and see if we can make some improvements to the car.”
