Rao Returns to FIA in Key Role Amid Sport Shake-Up

Shaila-Ann Rao rejoins the FIA as Special Advisor, boosting reforms as the organization reshapes its future in global motorsport.

The FIA has announced a major development: Shaila-Ann Rao is returning to the organization as Special Advisor to its President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

This marks a surprising comeback after her turbulent departure at the end of 2022. Starting May 1, 2025, Rao will advise the President on a wide range of matters, including regulatory and commercial strategies across the FIA’s seven World Championships.

Rao brings with her a wealth of experience in global motorsport. A dual-qualified lawyer (admitted in both England and France), she has held several high-profile roles, including Interim Secretary General for Sport and Legal Director at the FIA. She also served as General Counsel for the Mercedes Formula 1 team, where she worked closely with Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff.

Her return comes at a pivotal time. The FIA is deep into a broad transformation, both organizationally and financially. The federation is forecasting a €2.2 million operating surplus for 2024, a dramatic turnaround from the €24 million deficit reported in 2021.

President Mohammed Ben Sulayem welcomed her return, stating:
“I’m delighted to have Shaila-Ann Rao back at the FIA. Her outstanding background in global motorsport will be an invaluable asset as we continue to strengthen the regulatory and commercial structures of our World Championships. She will also advise me on matters concerning championship promoters, ensuring we deliver the best possible future for our drivers, teams, and member clubs.”

Rao herself expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the FIA, saying:
“I’m excited to support the FIA President in driving forward the progress made under his leadership. Strengthening the commercial and regulatory foundations of the FIA World Championships is key to their long-term success. The FIA holds a unique role in global sport, and I’m proud to contribute to shaping its next chapter.”
