In Montreal, Haas F1’s qualifying hopes were dashed, with Magnussen and Hulkenberg landing 14th and 19th, missing their high expectations.
This falls short of expectations for the American team, which, in line with its partner Ferrari, had anticipated stronger performances in Montreal.
“There was no traffic for me today, which was good,” said Kevin Magnussen.
“We thought rain would hit in Q2, so we started with a new set of tyres. That meant if it didn’t rain, we wouldn’t be great because as the track evolved, you’d have no fresh tyres for the end.”
“Unfortunately, the rain held off, so the lap I did on my first run was really good, given the choices we made. I think it was the best we could do.”
“I’m slightly more optimistic for the race. The pace on long runs seemed decent, even in dry conditions. Let’s see what the weather has in store for us tomorrow. We should be in contention for points regardless.”
Eliminated in Q1, Hulkenberg disclosed a technical issue. He will start 18th on the grid following the application of a five-place penalty to Esteban Ocon carried over from the Monaco Grand Prix.
“I think we left a bit late. We changed the rear wing before qualifying because I wasn’t happy with the car all weekend and had an issue with the rear wing not functioning as it should, so we decided to change it before qualifying,” Hulkenberg explained.
“This meant our entire running plan was slightly shifted, so we were on the back foot with the times, and it got quite hectic. Towards the end, I also had someone block me, parked at the last chicane, so all that made things a bit difficult.”
