Mercedes F1: Fun Day in Canada Despite Uncertainty

08/06/2024

Despite mixed results and uncertain conditions, Mercedes drivers Russell and Hamilton maintained high spirits and enjoyed a challenging day on the Canadian circuit.

Mercedes F1 ‘didn’t learn much’ this Friday in Canada. However, the drivers had a good feeling and enjoyed themselves.

George Russell finished second in a session cut short by rain, and despite a good feeling behind the wheel, the Mercedes F1 driver knows that a huge task awaits him tomorrow in FP3 and qualifying. He reveals that the teams didn’t really learn much from today.

“We had fun today. It was difficult to draw lessons for the rest of the weekend, as the conditions changed every lap. First, it rained, then it dried, then it rained again!” Russell recounts.

“The car felt generally good, but we won’t know our position relative to others until tomorrow. I was confident in the car today and felt confident throughout the race.”

“In FP3, you are usually very focused on your qualifying performance. But we will also need to evaluate our race pace. We need to be very clear about the changes we want to make before qualifying. Honestly, we didn’t learn much today. The weather could be similar tomorrow, so it will be interesting.”

Lewis Hamilton also had a good day with significant track time and enjoyment behind the wheel: “I felt very good today. I was eager to get going, regardless of the conditions. I’m glad we were able to maximize our track time, as that’s what we need on a circuit like this. It’s all about building up your rhythm.”

“Today was also about understanding the conditions and the new surface they’ve put in place. The car was solid throughout the race, and I didn’t even get to finish what would have been my fastest lap. This is one of the best circuits we go to, so I really enjoyed myself.”

“Recently, Saturdays have proven more challenging for us, but I feel confident and know that the car responds to my inputs. Ultimately, we won’t know until tomorrow afternoon where we stand in the rankings, but today was a very good day overall.”
