Post-Perez Era Sparks Doubt Over Mexican GP Renewal

Mexican GP Faces Uncertain Future Without Local Hero

10/02/2025

As Sergio Perez leaves the grid, concerns mount over the Mexican GP’s future, contract renewal, and the impact on ticket sales.

The promoter of the Mexican F1 GP believes the event can thrive even without local hero Sergio Perez—but he fears a contract renewal may not be offered.

Race weekends in Mexico have always been a standout celebration thanks to Perez, creating a festive atmosphere since its return to the calendar in 2015.

However, the current contract expires this year—and it will be the first without the Mexican on the grid following his dismissal by Red Bull.

A few months ago, Alejandro Soberon, CEO of race promoter CIE, expressed confidence that the Mexican GP could continue to succeed without Perez. He maintains that stance today.

“Marketing is everything,” he said. “It’s much better to have a local hero, but if you don’t, fans will always find a hero to support.”

However, with Perez’s absence now set in stone, Soberon appears more concerned about the long term.

“As organizers, we are naturally very worried about Sergio’s absence from the grid and are trying to find a way to secure a contract extension with Formula 1.”

“We are now able to offer the public a much better show than five years ago, so I believe the competition among drivers and the vibrant elements of our spectacle will be enough to maintain public interest.”

Initial feedback will come with ticket sales figures for the 2025 edition.

“We’ll review the situation in two or three months, which will give us the trends. If the 2025 season is as wild as everyone predicts, with Lewis Hamilton headlining at Ferrari, I believe we’ll still attract as many fans. And F1 will then be firmly established in Mexico.”
