Pirelli had anticipated a one-stop race at Imola, provided drivers used medium and hard compounds. Mario Isola, Pirelli’s Head of F1, confirms this was the winning strategy. Indeed, the two drivers who started on softs, Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso, had to make an additional stop.
“A very tight race, mostly without particularly exciting moments, but it livened up towards the end as Norris closed in on Verstappen,” says Isola. “On a classic circuit like Imola, overtaking has always been difficult, and this year was no exception.”
“The one-stop strategy, as expected, was the fastest and was adopted by the majority, with the first stint on mediums and the second on hards. Both compounds worked quite well, even though the drivers at the front pushed hard throughout the race, with track temperatures fluctuating between 43 and 50°C, despite some clouds over the circuit.”
The Italian is pleased to see that the manufacturer’s simulations regarding degradation windows were accurate: “The predicted pit stop window proved to be exact: those who stopped very early struggled towards the end.”
“Degradation wasn’t significant as there were few signs of graining. Finally, I must commend the wonderful Imola crowd, who were as passionate as ever, providing a great spectacle in the stands that I’m sure the drivers and teams appreciated.”
