Hungarian GP: Key Lessons on F1 Tyre Choices

23/07/2024

The Hungarian Grand Prix sheds light on optimal tyre selections, underlining strategic F1 dynamics.

At a Hungaroring unexpectedly cooler than anticipated, F1 drivers still had to manage their tires and make them last as long as possible. Pirelli particularly highlighted Yuki Tsunoda’s mastery in this regard, with 29 laps on mediums and 41 on hards, making just one stop.

Tsunoda and his teammate Daniel Ricciardo indeed completed, with 41 laps, the two longest stints of the race. Lance Stroll logged the longest stints on mediums (31 laps) and notably on softs, with 14 laps. Mario Isola, director of Pirelli’s F1 program, praised the spectacle provided by Formula 1.

“I think the 310,000 spectators who came to the Hungaroring this weekend and the millions of viewers and other channels around the world must have enjoyed themselves. The weekend started like a chess game and then reached its peak with a highly contested and open race in which the lead changed seven times,” Isola stated.

“With temperatures quite similar to those we saw during Friday’s second free practice session, the medium tire probably proved to be the most effective compound overall.”

“Without the clash with Hamilton, Verstappen would have almost certainly finished third. But the hard tire, which was certainly the most used compound, was also competitive, not just on the two Mercedes, but also on other cars.”

According to the Italian, this Grand Prix perfectly represented the need for teams to understand which compound reacts best with their car under certain conditions, in order to optimize their strategy and performance.

“In the end, I think this race once again demonstrated how important it is for teams to carefully determine which compounds are best suited to their cars, as well as to show how the current range of tires allows us to see how different strategic choices work on track.”

“This is, indeed, the main goal set for us each year by the FIA, Formula 1, and other stakeholders in the sport: to provide tires that ensure the utmost safety first and foremost, while allowing teams and drivers to fully exploit their potential. This is what we strive to achieve, not only in Formula 1 but also in the two junior categories, for which we are the sole tire supplier.”
