As F1 returns to Shanghai, Pierre Gasly aims to leverage past successes and current updates for significant progress.
Pierre Gasly is back in China for the first time in five years, like the other drivers, this time with Alpine F1.
He has a very good memory from there, as he recorded the fastest lap in the last Chinese Grand Prix held in 2019, then driving for Red Bull Racing. That race marked the 1000th Grand Prix in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship.
This year, the goals will be much more modest, but the Frenchman wants to push to advance his car and his team, currently at the bottom of the hierarchy.
“Japan was a tough race and we again finished far from the points. We suffered some damage to the car at the second start, which set us back a bit, and so we lost performance. Despite this, we are not where we want to be – as was highlighted in Suzuka – and we must continue to attack to progress.”
“There were still positive takeaways with the arrival of our first upgrades on the car, representing a step in the right direction. We just need to keep up these efforts in all areas. The team is continuously working hard to bring improvements and extract more performance, as we are far from where we want to be at this stage.”
“I spent a few days at Enstone last week visiting the team and preparing in the simulator. I see so many motivated people, and we will continue to give our all together.”
For the return of F1 to Shanghai, Gasly says he is “looking forward to going back to China after a five-year absence.”
“The circuit is quite unique with its long straights and very long corners. The challenges are numerous and it will be interesting to see the track conditions given the number of years Formula 1 has not been there.”
“This is also a Sprint weekend, the first of the year, and the first with a slightly revamped format, so we will look to maximize every opportunity that arises. We need to be on the pace from the first session to increase our chances throughout the week. Our main goal is to do our utmost while staying focused and motivated to catch up with the rest of the pack.”
