Piastri's Tough Day Relief for McLaren Amid Verstappen Clash

Piastri: A miserable race due to Verstappen

08/12/2024

Oscar Piastri endured Verstappen’s collision, salvaging a point, as McLaren celebrated their triumph in the Constructors’ Championship with pride.

Piastri unintentionally added to his boss Zak Brown’s heart-attack threat when he was spun by Max Verstappen at the start.

With only one McLaren against two Ferraris, the Australian was out of contention for the Constructors’ title until the end, where he managed to climb to 10th place and secure a point.

“It was a pretty miserable race, but the most important thing today is that we won the championship.”

“This is an enormous credit to everyone at McLaren for what they’ve achieved this year. I couldn’t be prouder of all of them.”

“Very, very happy with the work done this year. It’s nice to get the job done.”

On Verstappen’s overly ambitious move, he commented: “Probably, yes. But he came and apologized straight away, and the stewards deemed it a penalty.”

“Obviously, it was a tough race from there, but again, we reached our main goal, and that’s what matters.”

Is he aiming for the World Championship in 2025?

“Certainly. I hope we can start strong next season and take on that challenge right from the start.”

“I still have a lot to work on and improve, but I feel 2024 will be a good step up from my rookie season. I’m excited for next year, but first, I’ll take a break and then aim to fight for both championships.”
