Dubbed the “Ice-Boy,” Piastri’s fearless driving and sharp mind have made him this season’s most unexpected Formula 1 title contender.

Oscar Piastri might just be the dark horse of this Formula 1 season—and he’s earning a cool new nickname along the way: Ice-Boy.

It was in Saudi Arabia that the 23-year-old Aussie sent shockwaves through the paddock. He boldly challenged Max Verstappen into the first corner and went on to win the race, leapfrogging teammate Lando Norris to take the lead in the world championship standings.

Piastri’s calm, calculated driving style has been turning heads. His mother even weighed in this week, saying:

“He’s always been careful by nature, very strategic and smart in how he goes about things. Taking on Max into Turn 1 was a bit terrifying—but overall, Oscar doesn’t usually take big risks.”

International media are buzzing, with some already positioning him as the biggest threat to Red Bull’s dominance.

Spain’s AS put it bluntly:

“Out of McLaren’s calm and calculated approach, a ruthless driver has emerged—one who can stare Verstappen down and give him a taste of his own medicine.”

Meanwhile, Diario Sport dubbed him “the leader McLaren needs” and La Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy declared: “Formula 1 has a new face at the top: Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s Ice-Boy.”

Asked about the nickname, Piastri responded with a smile:

“I wouldn’t call myself that, but I get it. On track, I’m locked in—it’s all business. But off the grid, I’m just Oscar. It’s a completely different vibe away from racing.”

Even Max Verstappen is taking notice. The four-time world champion praised Piastri’s calm demeanor and clean execution, also crediting his mentor and manager, Mark Webber.

“Having Mark in his corner definitely helps. Everyone learns from their own journey—I had that with my dad. But at the end of the day, Oscar’s success is down to his talent. It’s great to see.”

1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve believes Webber’s involvement extends beyond coaching. According to him, the contract between McLaren and Piastri was cleverly crafted.

“It’s clear: McLaren can’t prioritize Lando over Oscar. As long as both are fighting for the title, there won’t be any team orders—unless something major happens with the constructors’ standings or one of them hits technical trouble.”

And Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko sees Piastri as more than just promising, he sees him as Verstappen’s biggest challenger yet.
“Based on recent performances, he’s emerging as the main threat. But the big question is whether he can keep this level of consistency throughout the season. Last year, he had moments where Norris was quicker, sometimes by a margin.”

For now, the Ice-Boy is cool under pressure—and heating up the title race.
