Piastri leads McLaren to surpass Red Bull, while Colapinto secures initial points at Williams.
Oscar Piastri Clinches Merited Victory at Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Securing His Second Career Formula 1 Win
Oscar Piastri claims his second victory of the season! The young Australian driver propelled McLaren to triumph at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the seventeenth round of the 2024 F1 calendar.
Starting from second on the grid, Piastri executed an undercut on leader Charles Leclerc to take the lead in the Grand Prix and held onto the top spot unyieldingly, despite repeated challenges from the Monegasque driver.
Finishing second, Leclerc has yet again failed to convert his pole position into a victory at Baku, marking the fourth consecutive year!
In third place, George Russell secured an unexpected podium, capitalizing on a collision between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Pérez in the penultimate lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Ferrari and Red Bull were contending for a podium spot before crashing into the barrier together.
A Stellar Outcome for Lando Norris
The standout performer at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was undoubtedly Lando Norris. Starting fifteenth on the grid, the British driver impressively finished the race in fourth place, ahead of his title rival, the Dutchman Max Verstappen, who once again faced difficulties with his Red Bull this Sunday.
Fernando Alonso also put in a solid performance with Aston Martin, finishing sixth in Baku. With Alex Albon taking seventh place and Franco Colapinto eighth, Williams too delivered a commendable performance. The top 10 was rounded out by Lewis Hamilton and Oliver Bearman, who stood in for Kevin Magnussen at Haas this weekend.
The next Formula 1 Grand Prix will take place next weekend at the Marina Bay street circuit in Singapore.
