Piastri hailed his Baku win as a career highlight, skillfully defeating Leclerc to secure victory.
Oscar Piastri clinched his second win of his burgeoning career in Baku. The McLaren F1 driver managed to overtake Charles Leclerc after a challenging start to the race and held the lead thereafter. He expressed satisfaction at having capitalized on the sole opportunity that came his way.
“I tried to take the lead at the start, but with DRS, I just didn’t have the pace. However, after the pit stop, suddenly I was closer, had more grip, and I knew I had to go for it because if not then, I wouldn’t get another chance,” Piastri stated.
“I made a long-range attack, succeeded, and then tried to hang on. I was a bit relieved when he fell out of the DRS zone, although it’s hard to relax here. But this is clearly one of the finest races of my career.”
McLaren now leads the constructors’ championship, and the Australian admits he would not have believed this possible, just like his victory, 12 months ago: “Considering where we were when I arrived, we were last, and now we’re leading.”
“Well done to the team who managed to make such progress, and helped me improve as well. Results like this would have been impossible for me 12 months ago, and I am eager to see what the future holds.”
